From topknots to nail art, the beauty world had its share of moments in 2012. Endless pins and tutorials on Pinterest helped celeb-inspired trends make their way to regular girls everywhere. These looks, some of which are merely a moment in time, defined what 2012 looked like. Here is a look back at the year in beauty.
Topknot Trend: Topknots were a huge hit. Lauren Conrad, Kourtney Kardashian, Gwen Stefani, and Jennifer Lopez are just a few celebs who sported the larger-than-life trend. These big, sleek buns are possible without extensions, with the help of a hair donut or a sock. Big-Name Collaborations: In 2012, MAC released collections collaborated on or inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Carine Roitfeld, Ricky Martin & Nicki Minaj, Iris Apfel, and Beth Ditto, to name a few. NARS released a limited-edition collection inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic prints. Everywhere you looked, big-time icons were emblazoned onto compacts and lipstick tubes. (Image via Harper’s Bazaar)

BANGS. Bangs were huge. See a few pics of stars who made the cut.
The Cateye. This signature ’60s style was revived in a big way this year, making appearances everywhere from red carpets to college campuses and nightclubs around the world. The versatility of this look lends it to almost any occasion, and makes eyes look huge and flirty. No wonder it’s so popular. (Image via Glamour)
Contouring: Perhaps thanks to Kim K., contouring took the spotlight this year. Seems like everybody learned how to do it, and tutorials flooded Pinterest faster than we could grab our bronzer. Once you try it and see the wildly flattering results, you’ll do it again and again…which means this trend is here to stay. (Image via Pinterest)
Another look that’s not going anywhere anytime soon: bold brows. I can’t get enough of them, and swoon over thick arches like this model was blessed with. Not born with picture-perfect brows? Plump yours up with pencil, brow pen, or powder and a stiff-angled brush. (Image via Style.com)
