Fighting Makeup Meltdown

makeup-meltdownThis intense heatwave has got me thinking about how impossible it is to look half decent when you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. Time for a post on fighting makeup meltdown! Let me start by saying that nothing — no product, technique, or miracle from the heavens above — will stop your makeup from slipping if you’re sweating. But there are products that can help, and steps you can take to prevent your face from turning into a Slip N’ Slide after two minutes outdoors.

smashbox-primerStart by applying a primer all over your face. It smooths out your complexion and gives makeup a base to which to adhere. Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer ($36) is a classic because it works beautifully and makes makeup go the distance.

garnier-bb-creamIn the heat, nobody wants to pile on makeup that’s just going to cake anyway. Skip the foundation and opt for something lighter, like a BB cream. Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream ($13) is a hardworking option that won’t break the bank. The creamy formula glides on skin to even out tone and conceal imperfections, and it’s a multitasker, so you can cut down on using other skincare products. Another great option: tinted moisturizer. For an allover glow, mix in a dab or two of a cream or liquid luminizer before applying.

mac-pro-longwear-concealerConcealer is one of the trickiest products to work with in hot weather. Chances are, it’s going to move, and you’re going to have to occasionally touch it up (dabbing it lightly with your fingertip will do). Maximize its potential by picking a long-wear formula like MAC Pro Longwear Concealer (18), which comes in all of the shades of MAC’s foundations.

mac-longwear-bronzerIn summer, bronzer is essential for a sun-kissed look. A long-lasting powder will help your bronzer stay exactly where you applied it, even when you start to wilt in the heat. MAC Temperature Rising Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder ($30) is a gorgeous, finely-milled powder with almost no shimmer, so you can use it to contour, too.

UD-eye-primerPrimer, primer, primer! Can’t stay it enough. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($20) is the best eye primer I’ve come across. Dab it on lids before applying any eye makeup, and it won’t go anywhere — not even on hooded lids, which are prone to smudging and smearing.

eyekoAside from concealer, eyeliner is one of the most difficult products to deal with in the heat. It just never stays put. On the hottest days, I really love Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner ($16) because once I apply it, it doesn’t move.

cream-formulasCream products last longer in heat than powder products, so opt for those if possible. Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow ($7) is great for eyes, and the intensity is amazing in the vivid colors; you can really pack this on for a bold look (and the neutral colors are just as good!). Bobbi Brown Sheer Color Cheek Tint ($26) is my top pick for cheeks (the dewy finish is amazing!).

tarte-finishing-powderBefore applying mascara, save your work with a light veil of translucent powder. Apply it with your fluffiest brush and sweep it on lightly to disperse the product evenly; you don’t want to actually see it, you just want it to seal in your makeup. Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder ($29) is excellent, and will last forever because you need the smallest bit to cover your entire face. And although it looks white, it’s invisible on skin.

lash-geniusWaterproof mascara is a summer must. Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat ($21) turns any mascara into a waterproof formula, so you can get all the benefits of your favorite mascara with the power of waterproofing. Sweep it on after your regular mascara, and it you won’t have to worry about raccoon eyes.

urban-decay-chillYour final step is to set everything with a spray. A makeup setting spray can work wonders in helping your makeup wear truer and longer. For summer, I like Urban Decay’s Chill Makeup Setting Spray ($29 for 4oz.), which not only locks down makeup like nobody’s business, but also provides a refreshing mist for your face — perfect on hot summer days.

And now you’re ready to head outdoors and beat the heat while still looking fab!

What are your favorite summer products? Do you have any meltproof techniques? I’d love to hear them!makeup-meltdown2
