Nuts for Coconuts

coconut-beauty-productsCoconut is one of my favorite things in the world. I’m so excited to see that coconut and its extracts, oil, and water is making a big impact in the beauty world — and on our health. Coconut is amazing for your skin, hair, nails, and overall health. It’s packed with antioxidants that ward off free radicals and slow down the visible signs of aging. It’s antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal, which means it’s great for boosting immunity. It’s a natural moisturizer for hair, skin, and nails. Lauric acid, coconut’s predominant saturated fat, helps raise healthy cholesterol levels. Finally, there has also been research conducted that suggests that coconut can be a cancer-fighter and helps boost metabolism, promoting weight loss.

So, why not use coconut to its full potential? Here are some coconutty products that I’m loving for the summer.

body-shop-coconut-shower-cream The Body Shop Coconut Shower Cream (originally $8; on sale now for $5): This body wash smells amazing, and contains no soap — just organic virgin coconut oil. It’s amazingly hydrating and leaves skin so soft.
josie-maran-coconut-cheek-geleeJosie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee ($22): You’ve probably heard of the benefits of drinking coconut water, one being that it gives skin a lovely glow. This blush is like a big sip of coconut water for your cheeks. The cream-gel hybrid (which looks like a stain when applied) is composed of 50% coconut water, with skin-loving argan oil added in. Available in five shades.

palmer's-hair-milk Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Replenishing Hair Milk ($5): Coconut oil contains natural lipids which make it nourishing and moisturizing. The lipids also make it act as a barrier for hair, which protects and strengthens. It’s also loaded with antioxidants that help protect against damaging free radicals that can leave hair looking dull and lifeless. Use this Hair Milk on damp hair, and it will act as a leave-in conditioner, protectant, moisturizer, and detangler….all in one bottle.

blue-magic-coconut-conditioner Blue Magic Coconut Oil Hair Conditioner ($4): This beauty cheapie (only $4 for 10.2 oz.!) provides the same benefits to your hair as the Palmer’s Hair Milk, but in deep conditioner form. Use it as a daily conditioner, or as a deep-conditioning treatment a few times a week by letting it soak into strands for 30 minutes.

100-pure-coconut-scrub 100% Pure Coconut Body Scrub ($25): Delivers all of coconut’s amazing benefits to the skin, while natural fruit acids gently exfoliate and polish.

rms-beauty-raw-coco-cream RMS Beauty Raw Coconut Cream ($18) is an organic, raw beauty multitasker. Totally pure and unrefined, this cream protects skin against free radical damage. Use it on face as a moisturizer, cleanser, and makeup remover, and as an all-over body cream.

estee-lauder-bronze-goddessEstee Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche Skinscent ($60): Ok, this one doesn’t actually have any coconut oil in it, but if you love the smell of coconut, you have to sniff this! The eau de parfum has a true coconut smell, with notes of Tahitian gardenia and bergamot. It’s so perfect for summer.

If you’re not into these products, just head to the grocery store and buy a jar of virgin coconut 0il (which is solid at room temperature and turns to a liquid when it’s warmed between your fingers). It has so many uses: face serum, lip balm, body moisturizer, hair treatment, bath soak, makeup remover, cuticle moisturizer…the list is virtually endless. And it’s great in the kitchen, too; replace it with butter in your cooking for heart-healthier dishes.

What are your favorite coconut products? Coconut-scented recommendations welcome, too!
