Staring at my reflection in the mirror recently, I noticed that my teeth were not as white as they could be. Despite regular trips to the dentist, the effects of coffee and other enamel-staining foods had started to take their toll. Thankfully, it’s never been easier to get a bright white smile. Smile Brilliant is a professional-strength at-home teeth whitening product, and they kindly offered to send me their full system. I’m so happy to share my results with you today.
This post has been in the works for four months! I wanted to make sure to fully use the system before forming an opinion on it.
So, how did it work? Find out after the jump. There are also details on a giveaway and a coupon code!
Getting started was effortless and convenient. In the mail, I received a set of two hard plastic trays, three small pots of blue base paste and white catalyst paste, and four plastic syringes each of whitening gel and desensitizing gel, each individually sealed in its own foil packet. I got four whitening sessions out of each syringe.
The first step was forming the impression for my custom trays. Following the directions, I mixed together the blue and white putties and pressed them into the plastic trays. The putty gave me a little bit of trouble at first; I could not get deep enough impressions into the surface after I placed the trays on my teeth. I emailed Smile Brilliant and asked if they could send me another set of putty, which they kindly did, and I tried to create the impressions again. I nailed it the second time around. After the impressions hardened for 24 hours, I sent them off to a lab. An addressed envelope was included in the original package, so all I had to do was drop it in my mailbox. Super convenient. About two weeks later, I received my custom whitening trays, which are made of a thin, soft, flexible plastic.
I did a little research before starting this whole process, which helped me understand how the system works and gave me realistic expectations regarding results. Most professional whitening procedures performed by a dentist use products that contain hydrogen peroxide. Smile Brilliant’s whitening gel contains 22% carbamide peroxide as its active bleaching agent, which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide. So although I can’t make exact comparisons between this and a professional whitening treatment, I can say that this is one of the strongest whitening products available without a prescription or a trip to the dentist.
Since this gel contains a pretty high concentration of carbamide peroxide, it may slightly sting your gums and mouth and cause sensitivity after whitening if you have sensitive teeth. (It is not painful; it’s more of a strong tingling sensation.) The Desensitizing Gel is included for this purpose, to be used after every whitening session. The gel does help decrease sensitivity; after using it, I was a tad less sensitive during each consecutive session. Because of my sensitivity, I had to space out my whitening sessions over the course of two months. The instructions recommend leaving the trays in for 45 minutes to three hours. I never left them in longer than one hour, due to sensitivity. That was still plenty of time to achieve lasting, noticeable results.
The results I saw were gradual, but definitely noticeable. As you can see in the photos, my smile is about two shades whiter than when I started. Aside from the amazing results it has delivered, I loved the convenience. Getting a professional-quality whitening from the comfort of my own home — with custom trays that fit my teeth exactly — could not have been easier.
I achieved great results with Smile Brilliant, and now have a solid tool in my arsenal against tooth discoloration.
