Summer Beauty: Fighting Frizz

Get sleek with the right products

With the right products, you can have a frizz-free summer.

It’s that time of year again when temperatures soar and humidity hangs in the air like a wet blanket. Given the current climate (thanks, global warming!), it’s time to get your mane under control, and combat frizz for good. These products make it a winning battle.

After the jump, see my tips and recommended products for silky-smooth summer hair. Whether you’re aiming for pin-straight strands or flowing waves, it’s all here.

For Straight Locks:

1. Living Proof No Frizz Straight Making Styling Treatment ($14-24US)
This new dream cream was created by a team of MIT scientists, so you know it’s got to be good. This is the first straightening product in 30 years that uses new molecules, not silicone, to lock in straight styles and give you a shiny, manageable mane. It also helps block oil and residue from your gorgeous tresses so you can go longer between shampoos (a lifesaver for dry summer hair).
Available in 3 levels of frizz-fighting power: spray (fine hair), cream (medium hair), and treatment (thick/coarse hair). If your hair is color-treated or dry, upgrade to the treatment for its added moisture-boosting benefits. Bonus: the more you apply, the more it straightens and moisturizes, without weighing hair down. It’s a new cult classic!

Fekkai Zero-Humidity Frizz Control2. Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair Zero-Humidity Frizz Control ($23US)
This limited-edition lightweight spray seals the hair shaft to lock in your straight ‘do. Keep frizzies and flyaways at bay for hours, even during the dog days of summer. It’s created with what Fekkai calls “AquaNutrients,” a blend of marine extracts that deliver intense hydration. Features a UV protectant to shield your highlighted or color-treated hair from the sun’s hair-fading rays. The scent is faintly reminiscent of suntan lotion, coconut and the beach.
Curly girls: Spray on as an extra frizz-fighting moisture barrier for smooth ringlets.

Garnier Fructis Smoothing Milk3. Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk (approx. $3US)
This is one powerful little bottle. Apply to blow-dried hair to keep it straight and provide extra moisture. (A little goes a long way, so use sparingly.)
This baby’s got some muscle: even on the most humid days, it kept my hair stick-straight and sleek, with absolutely no trace of frizz. You can’t beat the price for this hard-working cream.

For Wavy Manes:

Living Proof Curl Defining Treatment1. Living Proof Wave Shaping Curl Defining No Frizz Styling Treatment ($14-24US)
The name is a mouthful, but this fantastic product has all the benefits of the Straight Making treatment listed above, but for curly ladies. Want to put the bounce back into your ringlets, or unleash your flowing waves? Apply liberally, air-dry, and you’ve got gorgeous, effortless hair. Also available in the 3 formulas listed above.

Bumble Curl Conscious2. Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious Defining Creme ($27US)
If you have an erratic, weird wave in your hair (like me), you’ll want Curl Conscious to bring out the best in your waves. The Defining Creme amplifies waves and curls, and evens them out. The long-lasting scent is crisp, light and fresh; you’ll catch a whiff every time you flip your hot new curls over your shoulder.
Summer beauty doesn’t get much easier than this. Shampoo and condition (B&b also makes a Curl Conscious shampoo and conditioner), work this through from root to tip, comb, twirl or scrunch to create waves, and let air dry. Tip: I shampoo before bed and let my hair dry overnight, waking up with gorgeous waves in the morning.
Also comes in a Calming Creme to loosen up springy ringlets and fight frizz.

Aussie Catch the Wave3. Aussie Catch the Wave Mousse and Leave-in Conditioner (approx. $4US)
This drugstore staple gives curls major staying power. In addition to creating shapely waves or loopy curls, it quenches hair with moisture, like an ice-cold drink on a hot summer day. Apply after Bumble Curl Conscious, or before drying.

Bumble and bumble Surf Spray4. Bumble and bumble Surf Spray ($22US)
To finish off your seriously sexy new curls, spritz this from tips to roots and gently scrunch. It will amp up your curls and provide extra hold. You’ll look like you just took a dip, air-dried your hair in the sun, and stepped off the beach. Easy, effortless, chic. Perfect for summer styles.
Straight-haired ladies: If you want to stretch out time between shampoos, but your blowout is fading fast, use this to impart a sexy, windswept, tousled look. It’s bedhead without the tangles.

Happy, frizz-free summer!
